Mainz midfielder Nadiem Amiri is set to return to the German national team.

That's according to Bild, who reports that the 28-year-old will be included in Julian Nagelsmann's squad for the UEFA Nations League quarter-final tie against Italy on 20 and 23 March.

Mainz have surpassed all expectations this season and currently sit third in the Bundesliga table, thanks in no small part to the performances of Nadiem Amiri in central midfield.

In 24 appearances for Die Nullfünfer this season, he has scored seven goals and laid on three assists.

Amiri made his Germany debut under Joachim Löw in 2019 and has represented his country five times in total.

Nagelsmann and Amiri know each other from their time together at Hoffenheim. Back then, Nagelsmann promoted him from the youth team.

According to Bild, Bayern Munich winger Leroy Sané will also be part of the Germany squad that Nagelsmann will annonce on Thursday.
