Joao Palhinha's first-half dismissal made life difficult for Bayern Munich as they suffered a shock 2-3 defeat at VfL Bochum on Saturday.

Speaking after the game, Bayern Munich board member for sport Max Eberl didn't criticize the decision to show Palhinha the red card, but rather the Portugal international for taking too much of a risk.

"I was just with the referee and he actually explained it to me quite reasonably," said Eberl, according to t-online.

It was the referee's opinion that Palhinha had gone into the challenge knowing that there was a risk of hitting his opponent.

"You should avoid flying into such challenges in such a way that the referee has the chance to show red," said Eberl.

The team didn't show the reaction Eberl had hoped for after the dismissal.

“When you are a man down, you have to run more. We tried that in the second half, but we didn't run enough to compensate for being a man down.”

Palhinha himself left the Allianz Arena without speaking to the media.
