Florian Wirtz’s season has not been ended by injury in yesterday’s 2-0 defeat to Werder Bremen, according to reports from Kicker.

With Die Werkself trailing at the break, Wirtz entered the action as a half-time substitute but went down under a heavy tackle from Mitchell Weiser.

Alejandro Grimaldo replaced the German who was spotted on crutches after the game.

While not season-ending, it is still likely serious and more than just a knock despite no statement from the club.

Rumours of a two-month layoff circled around yesterday afternoon – this is not the case in the end.

A return to action before April is expected for the 21-year-old.

Leverkusen have said they will give a clearer update on Monday ahead of their UEFA Champions League second-leg tie with Bayern Munich.
