Frank Schmidt: “We’re not good enough to win Bundesliga games”

FC Heidenheim continued their slump in Bundesliga with a fifth straight defeat on Sunday against European hopefuls Mainz. Despite having Thursday’s return leg against FC Copenhagen to look forward to, Frank Schmidt wasn’t in the mood to hide his disappointment after the game.

"Congratulations to Mainz on their victory today,” Schmidt starts the press conference. “If we were such a good team, we wouldn't have lost today or in the last few Bundesliga games. Everyone tried, but we have to be honest. We didn't create any clear scoring opportunities today.

“We’re not good enough to win games in Bundesliga. It is not enough as it is. We have to find the switch to take the lead in the early stages and then shape the game so that we don't always have to put in a lot of effort. The bottom line is that our performance was not good enough to take anything away from Mainz today.”

The feelings are different in the away end. On his first start since returning from injury, Jonathan Burkardt helped the 05ers to three points with his 13th goal and 2nd assist of the season. The sought-after striker shared his delight after the game.

“It's a dream, I'm so happy to be able to spend more time on the pitch with the boys again. It's so much fun, today even with Nelly (Weiper) at my side. We've been waiting for this, and he really deserves it. The two goals crowned a good performance. I hope to be back at 100 percent in a few weeks."
