There has been speculation for many months that Florian Wirtz could leave Bayer Leverkusen at the end of the season.

However, that scenario now appears to be out of the question as Kicker reports that the Germany international has signed a new contract with Leverkusen.

The report claims that Bayer Leverkusen have extended Wirtz's contract, which was due to expire in 2027, by at least one year.

With his new deal, Wirtz has become Bayer Leverkusen's sole top earner - and by some distance.

According to Kicker, the 21-year-old is the first Bayer 04 player to earn a double-digit million-euro annual salary.

But at the same time, Wirtz's salary is well below the €20 million or more he could have earned at Bayern Munich if he had opted to join the Bavarians next summer.

The Bavarians have been courting Wirtz for some time, but by extending his contract, Leverkusen have at least staved off interest for the time being.

Wirtz has 11 goals and five assists in 24 appearances in all competitions this season.
