Bayer Leverkusen avoided a fourth successive defeat as the German champions came from 3-1 down to beat VfB Stuttgart 4-3 on Sunday evening.

The win saw Leverkusen close the gap on Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich to six points, meaning there's still plenty to play for with eight games remaining.

"To have that great feeling again after these ten days - that was important for all of us," said Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso after the game.

As for the title race, he said all Leverkusen can do is try to win their remaining games.

“A lot can happen. We have to win game by game. It's out of our hands.”

Leverkusen midfielder Robert Andrich also made it clear that the champions have not given up on overtaking Bayern at the top of the table.

"We just want to keep them on their toes until the end," he said.
