VfL Wolfsburg vs Borussia Dortmund preview: Wolfsburg looking for repeat of 2015 final
Wolfsburg
Wolfsburg were held to a disappointing 0-0 draw away at St. Pauli despite having the clearer chances on Saturday.
With the club in 14th place in the Bundesliga, coach Ralph Hasenhüttl hasn't been able to find the form which helped his side avoid a relegation battle last season in finishing 12th.
In the Pokal, it was an intense 1-0 win against the ten-men of Oberliga side TuS Koblenz which saw Wolfsburg move into the second round.
Manager Ralph Hasenhüttl's record in the cup is not good either, as he has never taken a side to the round of 16 and through to the second round.
Ahead of the tie against Dortmund, the Wolfsburg coach said: “I've seen a lot of good Dortmund games, they are a team with an uncannily large amount of quality. They have (in attack) with Guirassy a striker who can decide a game by himself.”
Team News
Wolfsburg are without several players for their game against fellow Bundesliga side Dortmund: Kevin Paredes, Mattias Svanberg, Sebastiaan Bornauw, Rogério, Bartosz Białek, Niklas Klinger and Aster Vranckx will all miss the game.
Lukas Nmecha and Lovro Majer will get minutes, according to Hasenhüttl in his press conference as they return from injury ahead of tomorrow's game.
Borussia Dortmund
Borussia Dortmund were shocked by a clinical Augsburg side on Saturday afternoon, as they lost 2-1 thanks to an Alexis Claude-Maurice double.
Dortmund were not potent enough in front of goal with players like Jamie Bynoe-Gittens (who had four shots in the game) not doing enough to get a goal.
Alongside this, Dortmund have an impeccable record in the cup as they have not been knocked out in the second round since 2011.
Last time in the cup, Nuri Sahin's Dortmund made relatively light work of Regionalliga side Phönix Lübeck by winning 4-1.
In this game, even non-regular starters like goalkeeper Alexander Meyer and Julien Duranville were given minutes by being subbed on.
However, this will likely not be the case for the next game as Dortmund play a tough top division side on Tuesday.
About the previous game against Augsburg on the weekend, BVB manager Sahin said: “The goals we conceded for the amount of effort we put in the game on Saturday was extreme.”
Team news
Karim Adeyemi, Giovanni Reyna, Julien Duranville, Yan Couto and Niklas Süle will all miss the tie for certain.
Julian Ryerson is a heavy doubt for the game on Tuesday night.
Also, Nuri Sahin is monitoring Waldemar Anton and Marcel Sabitzer closely to see if they can play on Tuesday.
